We Liked:
Handling, design, build, iA, Image quality, Lens, Manual control.

12 megapixel APS-C sized CMOS sensor, CompactFlash & Memory Stick storage, 3-inch, 912k pixel LCD screen, built in Super SteadyShot image stabilisation (any attached lens immediately becomes stabilised), eye start AF system, mode dial and custom settings

Eye start AF, user friendly feel despite level of complexity, well saturated, reasonably sharp and detailed images
We Didn't Like:
Blocky, chunky styling, lack of top plate mounted LCD status display (though such shooting settings are accessed via the main LCD)

Canon PowerShot SX100 IS Review
made by...Canon

Key Features:
8 megapixels, 10x optical zoom (equivalent to 36-360mm in 35mm terms), image stabilised lens, full range of shooting modes
We Liked:
Image stabilsiation actually seems to work - and Canon's solution is here implemented better than most we've seen - allowing for naturalistic, candid imagery
We Didn't Like:
Non rechargeable AAs supplied, no optical viewfinder or separate EVF, four way controller is fiddly to operate

Nikon Coolpix P5100 Review
made by...Nikon

Key Features:
12.1 million pixel effective resolution, 35-123mm (3.5x) zoom lens, ISO3200, optical image stabilisation aka Vibration Reduction (VR), 2.5-inch LCD with 230k pixel resolution, optical viewfinder, SD storage and 52MB of built-in memory, weighs 200g without battery or (optinal) memory card, 640x480 (VGA-quality) movies with sound
We Liked:
Rugged magnesium alloy body gives the impression that this is a DSLR that has been shrunk - crisp packet style - in an oven, DSLR-like command dial, quick start up and generally responsive in operation - even when shooting at maximum 12.1 effective megapixels, crisp, richly detailed, naturally coloured images, easy to use though with layers of sophistication to delve into further if you wish to do so
We Didn't Like:
Images display noise if you creep above ISO400, though 'VR' is a help to avoid camera shake it's not 100% reliable (but then what is?), 4cm macro mode is 'so so', lens noisy in operation (buzzes like a gnat)

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX55 Review
made by...Panasonic

Key Features:
8MP resolution, Intelligent auto Mode, Optical Image Stabilisation, large 3-inch, 230k pixels resolution LCD screen, ISO1600 manually selectable (ISo6400 via High Sensitivity mode)
We Liked:
Solid feel, metal build body, built-in optical image stabilisation, well metered, well exposed colour and detail rich images, large LCD screen, ease of use, compact size
We Didn't Like:
Could be faster committing maximum resolution stills to memory, no removable media supplied in the box... but not much else!

Pentax K100D Super review Review
made by...Pentax

Key Features:
6 megapixel resolution, 18-55mm standard zoom lens included in price, KAF2 bayonet lens mount, 2.5-inch LCD, 11-point auto focus system, ISO3200 light sensitivity, RAW and JPEG image capture
We Liked:
Results similar to those offered by some 10 megapixel rivals, 11-point auto focus system is quick to determine its target and the metering is similarly spot on, uncluttered ergonomically placed controls and sturdy build to the body despite the budget price, easy to use 'beginner' DSLR, inexpensive bargain price
We Didn't Like:
If you opt to power the K100D Super with four alkaline AAs you only get a day and a half's shooting at best out of the camera

Olympus E-510 Review
made by...Olympus

Key Features:
10 megapixel Live Mos sensor, built-in image stabiliser (sensor shift type), Live View function for image composition, Supersonic Wave Filter (dust avoidance), plus new image processing engine, Four Thirds lens mount
We Liked:
Four Thirds system allows for physically smaller lenses that offer twice the focal range of their 35mm equivalents, making for a lighter camera all round, built-in stabilisation allows for steadier shots in low light avoiding image blur, plus a better, more rounded grip than the E-410 makes holding and using the DSLR easier
We Didn't Like:
Physically bulkier than its E-410 baby brother, meaning that it cannot similarly lay claim to 'smallest DSLR in the world', auto white balance is sometimes inaccurate

Fujifilm FinePix S5 Pro Review
made by...Fujifilm

Key Features:
Fuji's proprietry Super CCD SR Pro sensor comprising 12 million paired photo diodes – six million larger ‘S’ photodiodes and 6.17 million smaller ‘R’ photo diodes, light sensitivity up to ISO3200, new Real Photo Processor Pro, 11-point auto focus system, simultaneous RAW + JPEG capture, six dynamic range settings plus three 'negative film' presets
We Liked:
Rock solid build means that the Fuji S5 will withstand a few knocks in the heat of the action, improved speed of operation, impressive exposure latitude whether shooting landscapes or portraits, image noise unproblematic up to ISO1600, vivid colours with bags of detail
We Didn't Like:
You'll have to budget for your own compatible Nikon F-mount lens on top of the price of the camera itself, plus the body is bulky. Expensive if considered from a consumer rather than a professional/enthuiast perspective and there are some question marks over whether the SR chip's photo diode set up is really the equivalent of a standard 12 megapixels - though these are familiar and recurrent gripes

Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ3 Review
made by...Panasonic

Key Features:
10x optical zoom with Leica optics, 7.2 megapixels, up to ISO3200, 20 scene modes, 3-inch LCD screen for shot composition and review
We Liked:
Solid performance, good quality build, extended zoom range, fair price given the level of specification on offer
We Didn't Like:
Rather uninspiring design, bulkier and weightier than more slimline compacts

Nikon D40x Review
made by...Nikon

Key Features:
10.2 megapixel resolution, 3 frames per second continuous capture, light sensitivity starting at ISO100, long life rechargable battery (good for up to 520 shots)
We Liked:
Four million more pixels to play with than its baby brother the Nikon D40, improved capture rate (up fom 2.5fps), plus longer life battery (up from 470 shots from a single charge)
We Didn't Like:
These upgraded features are not particularly significant to existing users and don't make a massive difference to operation or image quality, though they do bring the product into sync with the line ups of its rivals (notably Canon's 400D).

made by...Pentax

Pentamirror viewfinder, indistinct finder info display, some key controls only in menus

made by...Olympus

Key Features:
6MP resolution, power comes courtesy of two AA batteries, larger than average (at this price level) 2.5-inch screen, 10 scene modes, 5cm clsoe ups
We Liked:
Some of the sharpest and most naturalistically coloured images seen from a pocket snapshot camera at this price
We Didn't Like:
Boring, boxy design, plastic feel, no removable media included (so budget extra for a card)

Sony Cyber-shot H2 Review
made by...Sony

Key Features:
12x optical zoom (36-432mm equivalent), 2.0-inch LCD screen, ISO1000 light sensitivity, super macro mode, 30MB internal memory plus optional memory Stick Duo & Memory Stick Pro storage, powered by two AAs
We Liked:
Zoom capability, backed up with built in Super SteadyShot image stabilisation to avoid the blurring effects of camera shake at the extreme telephoto end of the focal range. Plus the vividly colourful and sharp images that we expect from Sony
We Didn't Like:
Mainly plastic build. AA power rather than dedicated lithiuim ion cell (though AAs are rechargeable). No removable media supplied with the camera 'out of the box'.

Pentamirror viewfinder is small and quite gloomy, bright conditions hamper Live View, barrel distortion on 14-42mm standard zoom.

We Liked:
Image quality, fast start up, customisable control, USB 2.0 connectivity, programmable “FUNC” button, build, ease of use, in-camera editing, help menu system.
