The i-Station Traveller stereo speakers are compact and lightweight at 156g making them hardly noticeable should you want to carry the speakers on holiday in order to get a bit more oomph from your music or, from say, a DVD played on your laptop when traveling.
The novel design has a central swiveling platform that contains the four (supplied) AAA batteries that power the speakers (there’s an on/off switch on the back, a mains adapter socket too) with a neat, blue tell-tale light that comes on, it’s in the grill front of the right speaker (from the front) to help you remember to turn them off. The swiveling central section also acts as a nicely stable platform for your MP3 player.
Once connected via the 3.5mm jack, it’s housed in a recessed slot on the back, the two speakers slide apart to make room for your player. The whole ensemble is neat and self-supporting the only minor issue being the short cable used to connect to a player. It can be a little irksome when connecting to a laptop as it is short and leaves little option on speaker positioning.
However, the 32mm neodymium speaker drivers deliver a total of 4W music power, which is pleasingly rich and surprisingly loud, ideal for hotel rooms should you want to play your music collection for example. The only distortion I noticed is at full volume when the more base-heavy music tracks start to kick in. Battery life is good too, a week away in the summer saw one set of batteries last the entire week with around two hours use a day. Not bad at all.
